Montparnasse - A bit of history

The name “Montparnasse” comes from “Mont Parnassus” and was given to this district by students who frequently came here to recite poetry.

During the 18th century, Boulevard Montparnasse was neglected; during the Revolution many dance halls and cabaret opened their doors.

Montparnasse became very popular in the early 20th century as the centre of Parisian intellectual and artistic life. A multitude of people came here from around the world to live the Bohemian life. The area also became a refuge for those in political exile, such as Lenin and Trotsky.

Local residents often engaged in endless discussions in nearby cafés such as La Rotonde, Le Select, Le Dôme, La Closerie des Lilas and La Coupole. In these places, important figures such as Zadkine, Paul Fort, Apollinaire, Max Jacob, Hemingway, Fargue, Breton, Cocteau, Fitzgerald, Henry Miller, Miro, Foujita and others are forever imprinted in our memories.

Our favourite places

La Coupole, La Rotonde and Le Select – three luxurious traditional brasseries!
